Mark your calendars for WinterLight on November 30th and All Aboard for the Holidays on December 7th and 8th

It was about this time last year that I took a drive out Highway 2 to the MacLachlan Woodworking Museum to participate in WinterLight. Now in its 8th year, WinterLight is a popular outing for both adults and children and it was easy to see why. This event has a great mix of activities in a peaceful, rural setting.

As I got out of the car, I could smell a campfire. Ahh, the good life — watching the sparks fly as a musician played popular campfire songs. And we even got kettlecorn! This was very popular with the children. Inside the log cabin and the other museum buildings, the place was humming. Children were busily making crafts. I enjoyed the woodturning demonstration where a block of wood was magically turned into a mouse.

This year WinterLight is on Saturday, November 30th.  The craft activities run throughout the day (10am to 5pm) and other activities are scheduled at specific times, such as the nature walks by the Kingston Field Naturalists at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

Another great family activity you’ll want to put on your calendar is the event at the PumpHouse, All Aboard for the Holidays. It runs on Saturday December 7th from 10am to 5pm and Sunday December 8th from noon to 5pm. Although I haven’t attended this one yet, I’ve heard enthusiastic reports from families who’ve attended in the past.

Imagine the PumpHouse, decorated as a winter wonderland where model trains travel through delightful settings. You’ll be able to learn about trains from expert train volunteers or simply take part in the many hands-on holiday activities. The winter craft station is always a favourite. You’ll want to check in advance for details about when Santa will be arriving.

For anyone wanting a quieter and calmer experience at the PumpHouse, a special winter wonderland session is available on Sunday morning. The lights will be dimmed, and the music turned off so that anyone needing a more relaxed environment can enjoy the event. Please pre-register for this session.

For both WinterLight and All Aboard, you have the option of paying regular admission rates upon arrival or registering in advance to donate an unwrapped toy in lieu of admission fees. Be sure to enjoy at least one of these great holiday family-friendly events.
